The collection's evolution captured the diverse and dynamic expressions of artists across India. As we look back and continue to enjoy the works of those who are now recognized as India's Modern Masters, we are proud to have supported their creative vision. We at Citi are committed to celebrating the inspired hues and notes of India's rich culture and aesthetic legacy.
NILIMA SHEIKH (b. 1945)
Nilima Sheikh studied history at Delhi University before pursuing an MA in painting at Baroda. Over the years, she has experimented with almost every type of painting, from hand held miniatures to stage, and many traditions such as Japanese and Pahari. Her artistic use of colours produce intense representations of what we would consider ordinary. While her earlier work from the 1980s dealt largely with landscapes, flora, fauna and such, her 12-piece set in 1984, titled When Champa grew up, was a seminal event. It vividly narrates the true story of a married young girl who is tortured and burnt by her in-laws. Her recent work deals with feminine issues.
