Debasis Ghosh is Public Affairs Officer, Citi India, and Cluster Head Global Public Affairs for South Asia. Debasis is responsible for media relations, executive and internal communications, and corporate social responsibility activities for India, with oversight of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He is also a part of the India leadership team.

Debasis has made significant contributions towards enhancing Citi’s brand and protecting the bank’s reputation with key external and internal stakeholders in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, while continuously promoting Citi’s global network and solutions.

Under his leadership, bringing his experience of over 26 years, Debasis constructed and executed the Citi India franchise turnaround story, contributed to business strategy, while reinforcing Citi’s leadership positions across digital banking, credit cards, wealth management, treasury and trade solutions, investment banking, and markets. He introduced new communication formats and tools, including animation and videos, to raise client excellence, reinforce a strong ethical culture, improve work-life balance and wellness, and encourage diversity amongst Citi India’s +21,000-strong employee base.

Between April 2014 and March 2021, Debasis expanded Citi’s community activities in financial inclusion, education, art and culture, and youth economic opportunity, touching more than 15 million lives across low-income households in India, with an investment of INR 4.9 billion through 58 relationships. Over this time, The Asset, Finance Asia, Asiamoney, and Financial Express have consistently recognized Citi as the best international bank while The Asset and Global Finance named Citi best digital bank across categories.

Debasis is responsible for pioneering several innovative programs in India. In 2014, he introduced Citi Journalistic Excellence Award program, run in partnership with Columbia School of Journalism in New York. In the following year he relaunched the initiative, India Innovation Grant Program, to nurture sustainable developmental ideas and projects. In 2016, he created Giving at Citi, which became the first branded payroll deduction program within Citi globally to commit institutional matching and encourage employee volunteering for social causes.

In 2020, he created two one-of-a-kind community programs in public health and food security, namely, Ummeed and You Nominate. We Donate. Both were unprecedented in corporate giving in terms of construct, execution, and last-mile connectivity in serving the needs of low-income communities. In the same year, he spearheaded philanthropic investments into the country’s first deep-science incubator to help solve for pandemic-induced societal problems and into new ideas in the areas of finance, agriculture, and education, to encourage India’s start-up ecosystem.

Debasis acted as interim head of Public Affairs for Citi India between July 2014 and March 2015, even as he held the role of Head of Media Relations for Citi India from November 2009. He joined Citi from Yes Bank, where he was Country Head of Communications and Investor Relations. Prior to this, he headed communications and investor relations at Rediff.com, where he was part of the core team that launched the start-up’s IPO. He began his career in the advertising industry, working for several leading agencies, including Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising and Rediffusion D-Y&R.
