The Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF) Claim Procedure

What is The Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF)?

The Reserve Bank of India has mandated banks to identify accounts where there has been no customer-initiated transaction for a period of more than 10 years. As per the regulation, banks are required to transfer credit balance in such accounts to Depositors Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF).

You can either visit the nearest Citibank Indian branch or courier the following documents to the mailroom.

  • Signed request letter to refund the balance, mentioning your account number
  • Signed photocopy of Passport
  • Signed photocopy of your mailing address proof

Please refer below for the list of documents accepted as mailing address proof

  • Valid Passport with address;
  • Voter’s ID card issued by Election Commission of India;
  • Valid Driving license with address;
  • Job card issued by NREGA duly signed by an officer of the State Government;
  • Letter issued by the National Population Register containing details of name, address or any other document as notified by the Central Government in consultation with the Regulator;
  • Aadhaar Card / e-Aadhaar*

*By submitting a copy of your Proof of Possession of Aadhaar Number, containing Aadhaar number, you confirm and agree that the Bank has duly explained to you that submission of Proof of Possession of Aadhaar number is no longer mandatory and you have the option to submit any one of the above documents. If you provide such a document Proof of Possession of Aadhaar number containing your Aadhaar number, please note that (i) you are providing the same as an officially valid document voluntarily in accordance with extant rules and regulations; (ii) you are required to redact/blacken out the first eight digits of Aadhaar number such that only last four digits of the Aadhaar number are visible and (iii) in case you do not redact/blacken out the Aadhaar number, it shall be deemed that you have authorized Citibank to redact/blacken out the same on your behalf.

In case you do not have any one of the above documents as proof of mailing address, please submit the following documents.

  • One of the above documents for permanent/non-mailing address.
  • Any one of the below documents as proof of mailing address.
    • Utility bill which is not more than two months old of any service provider (electricity, telephone, post-paid mobile phone, piped gas, water bill);
    • Property or Municipal Tax receipt;
    • Family pension payment orders (PPOs) issued to retired employees;
    • Letter of allotment of accommodation from employer issued by State or Central Government departments, statutory or regulatory bodies, public sector undertakings, scheduled commercial banks, financial institutions and listed companies and leave and license agreements with such employers allotting official accommodation

Important Information

  • Kindly mention your complete account number in the request letter.
  • Self-attested document(s) need to be submitted for all the joint holders maintained on the account.
  • In case of a minor’s accounts(s), kindly submit the documents for the guardian as well.

  • In case your mailing address has changed, kindly mention the same in the request letter and submit the address proof documents as mentioned above.
  • In case your account has been closed for some reason, kindly mention the account details where the funds have to be transferred (i.e. Account Number, Account Name, Bank Name & IFSC code) in absence of which Demand Draft will be sent to the address mentioned in the address proof submitted by you. Please note that transfer will not be done to any account other than that of the Account Holder.

As part of our process, we would call you at your registered mobile number for verification purposes. Please note this process would only be applicable if you have submitted the documents via courier. In case you have visited any of our branch in India for DEAF claim, this process will not apply. Upon successful verification of documents and telephonic confirmation (if applicable), the funds would be credited back to your account. In case the account has been closed, either the funds would be transferred to the account mentioned in the request letter or Demand Draft would be sent to your registered mailing address.

The average turnaround time for handling DEAF claim requests is 7 working days.
