Step-by-Step guide for Account Conversion

If you are an existing Citibank Customer, and you wish to convert your domestic account to a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account, please follow the below steps.

Please keep the following handy before you begin the conversion process:

  • Valid Passport
  • Recent photograph
  • Valid visa
  • Proof of overseas address ( Driving License, Passport, Govt Issued Document)

Please note:

  • If you have multiple holders in the account, then the conversion journey needs to be completed for each holder. If your second holder’s status is not changing to NRI, then the holder will be deleted from the account upon selection.
  • If you hold other linked products with Citibank, then the other products will be either converted to NR or closed. Click here to know about the treatment of linked products.
  • If the form is incomplete, then the data will be stored for a period of 30 days, post which it will be deleted

1. Login to your Citibank Online Account.
Under the Banking tab, click on Redesignate to NRO from the left navigation window.

2. Click here to go to Redesignate to NRO

2. Enter all the details as required, and click on the check box to proceed.

Country of residence will be the country to which you are relocating or relocated. If you are relocating overseas for the first time, then please select Yes.

3. Further, scroll down to fill in more details, as required. Click on Save and Continue to proceed.

Note: In case you do not have PAN, please click on the checkbox and submit a signed copy of Form 60. Click on the indicated link to download Form 60 and upload a duly filled and signed Form 60 in the last page.
Form 60, in absence of PAN, is a mandatory document and failure to submit may result in account closure

4. Fill in the details, under Employment Details.

Select your current employment details and share your source of funds for the account, your income (in USD), number of years since you have been overseas and the average account balance that you wish to maintain.

5. Next, enter details of your expected rupee withdrawals and expected rupee deposits per month.

This will be an indicative amount and number of withdrawals and deposits you will make on your account.

6. Now, enter your foreign address details under Current Address. Please note you will have to upload an acceptable address proof for your foreign address that you enter here

Please note: You will have to submit an Officially Valid Document (OVD), as listed below, as proof of address for your current/residential address. If you do not have an OVD proof for your current/residential address, then submit one of the below extended address proof documents for your current/residential address and update the permanent address field, subsequently displayed, with your OVD address. Do not forget to upload both these address proofs at the end.

List of Officially Valid Documents for address proof

  • Valid Passport with address
  • Valid Driving license with address
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card
  • Document issued by Government department of foreign jurisdictions containing address on it
  • Letters issued by Foreign Embassy / Mission in India mentioning address (acceptable as address proof only if you hold foreign passport)
  • Aadhaar Card issued by Unique Identification Authority of India**
  • Voter ID card issue by Election Commission of India
  • Letter issued by the National Population Register containing details of name and address

List of extended address proof documents

  • Utility bill not more than two months old of any service provider (electricity, telephone, post-paid mobile phone, piped gas, water bill)
  • Property or Municipal tax receipt
  • Pension or family pension payment orders (PPOs) issued to retired employees by Government departments or Public Sector Undertakings, if they contain the address
  • Letter of allotment of accommodation from employer issued by State Government or Central Government Departments, statutory or regulatory bodies, public sector undertakings, scheduled commercial banks, financial institutions and listed companies and leave & license agreements with such employers allotting official accommodation.

**By submitting a copy of your Proof of Possession of Aadhaar Number, containing Aadhaar number, you confirm and agree that the Bank has duly explained to you that submission of Proof of Possession of Aadhaar number is no longer mandatory and you have the option to submit any one of the above documents. If you provide such a document Proof of Possession of Aadhaar number containing your Aadhaar number, please note that (i) you are providing the same as an officially valid document voluntarily in accordance with extant rules and regulations; (ii) you are required to redact/blacken out the first eight digits of Aadhaar number such that only last four digits of the Aadhaar number are visible and (iii) in case you do not redact/blacken out the Aadhaar number, it shall be deemed that you have authorized Citibank to redact/blacken out the same on your behalf.

7. Enter details under Permanent Address.

Please click on the check box in case your Permanent Address is the same as your Current Address. Else, please fill the address in the fields

Please note that if your current address, as entered under step 6, is not supported by a OVD proof then you are required to update the permanent address which is supported by an OVD. The OVD document will have to be uploaded at the end, before submitting the request.

8. Next, enter details under Alternate/ Office Address.

Please note that Current Address will be replicated if Office Address is not captured.

If you have submitted acceptable address proof for current/permanent address then it is not mandatory to submit address proof for alternate address.

9. Select one of your addresses as mailing address. This is the address where you will receive all Citibank related mails.

You will continue to receive all your other Citibank NRI correspondence to your this e-mail address even if you opt out of Statement to E-mail.

Click on Save and Continue to proceed.

10. The Nominee Details window opens.
We sincerely urge you to maintain a nominee for your account. To add or modify the nominee details, click on Yes, otherwise click on No.


Note that for adding or changing a nominee, DA1 or DA3 forms are required, respectively.

If you wish to open NRE Account without nomination, click on Yes, otherwise click on No.

Please read the Terms & Conditions and click on the check box to accept.

11. Scroll down and fill in the details as indicated in the form: Marital Status, Father’s Name, Mother’s Name and KYC Number, if any.


If you want a Debit Card for your NRE Account, click on Yes, otherwise click on No.

12. Scroll down to the FATCA/CRS Declaration. Fill in the details: Name, Date of declaration and Capacity, as indicated.


Next, select all the countries where you are resident for tax purposes and specify your (Tax identification number)TIN.
Click on Add Country to select more countries.If you do not have the TIN number for a country, click on the radio button as indicated.

Specify your Country and City of Birth.

Read the Terms & Conditions and click on the checkbox to accept.
Click on Save and Continue to proceed.

Please note,

  • 1. Kindly fill your Name (as per valid identify proof)
  • 2. In case you have a TIN Number, Kindly ensure to fill it correctly.

13. The Upload Documents page opens.
Upload the required valid documents from your system. Links of the forms are also available for your reference.

Please note,

  • 1. You will need to upload all documents at once to proceed.
  • 2. Ensure that the documents are less than 2MB in size
  • 3. The file name length does not exceed 30 characters
  • 4. If one or more of the documents uploaded or insufficient or discrepant, then initimation will be sent to you for resubmission. Please do ensure to submit the documents accordingly within 30 days to avoid any account restrictions or closure.
  • 5. If you are submitting Aadhaar, kindly ensure to mask/blacken out the initial 8 digits of your Aadhar number & then upload
  • 6. CRS document must be physically signed then scanned & then uploaded.
  • 7. Ensure that the TIN number is correctly filled in CRS document and matches with details submitted on the previous page.
  • 8. Name & Signature on the CRS & W9 form must match with the proofs submitted
  • 9. Please upload valid & not expired documents as proofs.

Read the Terms & Conditions and click on the checkbox to accept and continue.

14. Next Steps:

Upon successful conversion,

  • 1. You will receive a confirmation on email
  • 2. Your chequebook and debit card will be delivered to your mailing address

In case of missing documents or information,

  • 1. Your account will be partially converted, and you will receive an email alert on the same. Please note that the pending/missing details and/or documents will have to be provided/submitted within 30 days from the alert, to avoid account blocking/closure.

In case mandatory information is missing,

  • 1. Your application will be rejected and you will receive an alert and accordingly will have to re-submit the application with the correct information
