Our story of banking in convenience begins on Fleet Street, London. Tara, a cub reporter with The Times, was wondering what to gift her parents in Chennai on their 25th wedding anniversary. Suddenly a story on Citibank NRI Business celebrating 20 years of service flashed in on the Reuters wire. This gave her an idea. She would gift her parents with financial freedom by giving them access to her Citibank Rupee Checking Account.
She already knew that the Rupee Checking Account had a mandatee facility that allowed a dear one in India to operate the account. She chose her father as the mandatee and sent him the form. Tara's father, Mr Iyer filled it in, signed it and along with some necessary documentation sent it to the NRI Service Center of Citibank in Chennai.
A week later the Rupee Checking Account checkbook and an IndianOil Debit/ATM card (Mr Iyer had four co-branded cards to choose from and based on his spending pattern and lifestyle needs, he chose the IndianOil Debit/ATM card) were delivered to his doorstep. Delighted, he phoned Tara only to realise she was still sleeping (in his excitement he had forgotten the time difference). A sleepy Tara suggested he go on a holiday with Amma who had always wanted to go to Kerala and see the backwaters.
Mr Iyer used his new card to book his tickets to Kochi. His first stop there was at the Citibank ATM to withdraw cash (he had a fear of losing money en route so he carried the bare minimum). They then proceeded to Alleppey. He once again showed off his new card at the petrol outlet. Their taxi driver was not carrying enough cash to pay for fuel. Since they were at an IndianOil outlet there would not be any transaction costs either.
After having used his card yet again to pay for their resort stay, Mr and Mrs Iyer returned to Chennai. Mr Iyer once again forgot time zones and caught Tara on her way to work. He spent a long time on the phone filling her in on their trip. Then Mrs Iyer took over and gushed out her version. The telephone bill would be high this month but Mr Iyer was not worried. After all he could pay for it using Tara's Rupee Checking Account. That's convenience banking for you, from Citibank.
