India has in the past decades made rapid advances in the field of economic growth and social mobility resulting in increased education and employment opportunities for women although the participation rate of females in the labour pool & literacy still lags behind men. Lower participation of women in the labour pool is a reflection of the systemic disincentives that are faced by budding women leaders at every stage of their career starting right from education. Affirmative action on part of organizations is necessary to address the lack of women in corporate world especially at leadership positions.
Citi as an equal opportunity employer promotes a work environment where diversity is embraced and employees are provided with tools, resources and encouragement to achieve their true potential. We however recognise that ends of diversity will not be met by concentrating our efforts solely on our organisation. We need to reach out, and to the best of our ability address the disincentives that may prevent women from entering the world of business / technology etc.
With this aim in mind Citi is proud to announce a unique National Level Scholarship for Young Women. Citi hopes to encourage women to excel in business / corporate world and thereby become active role models and leaders.
"Citi Woman Leader Award" recipients will each receive an award equal to their academic expenses for the 2010-2011 academic year. A group of female graduate students (from India's premier MBA campuses) will be chosen and scholarships will be awarded based on leadership potential, consistent academic performance and acuity of vision.
We believe that a good business leader is by definition also a good individual, a good citizen and a good team player. Our thrust in awarding the scholarship will be on leadership skills, which we believe, are evidenced by a track record of ideal citizenship, commitment to academic achievement and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the society. The scholarships will therefore reward not an individual but a well-rounded personality.
We intend, through this scholarship, to enable more women to join and partake in the economic growth of India. We also wish to nurture, recognize and reward talent so as to create a positive feedback loop which will encourage more and more woman to join and excel in the field of business.
Citi will continue to extend support to the scholarship recipients beyond the monetary benefits by providing them mentorship and networking opportunities later in their career as well.
This award has been launched at IIM A, B, C, L, K, I, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR & JBIMS. Please contact the Career Services office for more info on the award.
